"Thank goodness, our
tent is solid, because last night it snowed heavily", according to Nicole.
Our globetrotters are in Tok Junction and moved from their tent to a motel
with a very appropriate name : 'Snowshoe'....
'The unexpected encounter with the grizzly bear really scared us ! We 'cycle'
as good as on our own. The constant snowfall makes people stay inside. The
slightest noise we hear, frightens us and we are prepared for the worst ! Bears
are awake from their hibernation and are hunting for food. Last night we were
listening to every sound and we started singing out loud. All sorts of songs. Eddy
Wally won't believe his ears when we tell him that his songs were being used for
daunting grizzly bears !!'
'We came to the conclusion that we are going through the longest winter of
our life. For 8 months now we knock through snow, ice and temperatures below
zero. Here in Alaska people are anxious for the spring to come. It has never
took that long before ! The water refuses to break/melt, people tell us
disappointed.
The past few days we met road-workers. They invited us to take a break in
their resting areas. When we came in, one of the men took off his coat and
shirt. We laugh about it now but at the time, we were scared.
All the man wanted to show us, were his injuries, left overs from a fight
with a black bear. He was cutting trees with a chain-saw. He used the saw to
concquer the bear. The men were surprised to seeing us travelling without a
weapon. They offered us a gun and bullets but whe refused. There is no chance
us crossing the Canadian border with a rifle and bullets ! Instead we will use
pepper spray and a tooter (on gaz).
